Twenty-one families whose homes were destroyed in a fire in Upper Kagudoy, Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, received financial assistance from the city government to help them rebuild.
The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) distributed the emergency shelter assistance on Aug. 27 at the Barangay Basak Gymnasium after assessing households affected by the Aug. 10 fire.
Fifteen homeowners received P30,000 each, while three families classified as sharers received P8,000 each. Six renters received P5,000 each.
The city based the amount of assistance on the beneficiaries’ housing status and individual circumstances under its emergency shelter program.
CSWDO head Ma. Sheila Baylosis said the assistance would help the affected families address immediate needs as they recover from the fire and begin rebuilding.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, together with the Barangay Basak Council, also distributed food packs and other essential items to the displaced families.
The affected residents were temporarily housed in evacuation areas established after the fire while local officials coordinated relief and recovery assistance.
Barangay Basak Captain Jasmine Marie Chan-Olmstead led the distribution and earlier coordinated the barangay’s response to the affected households.
The city government said the latest assistance followed an assessment of the families’ conditions to determine the appropriate support for each household.
The Aug. 10 fire destroyed the residents’ homes in Upper Kagudoy and forced the families to leave their houses.
The shelter assistance forms part of the city’s disaster response for residents who need temporary support while rebuilding their homes.
