The ground where Datu Lapulapu and his men once defended their homeland became the setting for Lapu-Lapu City’s tribute to heroes on National Heroes Day on Monday, Aug. 31.
Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan and Congressman Junard “Ahong” Chan led the wreath-laying ceremony at the Mactan Liberty Shrine before the monument of Datu Lapulapu.
A 21-gun salute followed as city officials, barangay leaders, public servants, uniformed personnel and residents gathered to commemorate the country’s heroes.
King-Chan said holding the ceremony at the historic site gave the occasion added significance.
“Standing here today, on the very ground where Datu Lapulapu and his men stood centuries ago, gives National Heroes Day a meaning that words alone can hardly capture,” King-Chan said.
She recalled the sacrifices of national figures such as Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio and Apolinario Mabini, as well as other Filipinos whose contributions may no longer be widely remembered.
But King-Chan said heroism also continues through people who serve their communities, including teachers, health workers, rescuers, soldiers, police officers, firefighters, Coast Guard personnel, volunteers and disaster responders.
She also recognized farmers, fisherfolk, overseas Filipino workers, parents and other workers for the sacrifices they make for their families and communities.
“These are the heroes of our own time. They may never have their names carved in stone, but their service is reflected in the lives they protect, the families they support, and the communities they strengthen,” she said.
King-Chan said public officials can honor the country’s heroes by making decisions that serve the people and protect public trust.
“The most meaningful way we can honor those who came before us is by giving purpose to what they sacrificed for,” she said.
She also urged young Filipinos to learn not only the names of the country’s heroes but also the principles that guided their sacrifices.
“Heroism does not require a battlefield. It can be found in choosing what is right, serving others, protecting our communities, and doing our part for the country we share,” King-Chan said.
