Providing for a family can be an act of heroism, Mandaue City Vice Mayor Glenn Bercede said as the city marked National Heroes Day on Monday, Aug. 31.
Bercede highlighted the role of ordinary people in their families and communities during the city’s commemoration, saying heroism is not limited to figures remembered in history.
“We are all heroes. Ang pagdala lang nato sa pamilya, hero na ta sa atong kaugalingon,” Bercede said. (We are all heroes. Simply providing for our families already makes us heroes in our own way.)
He said Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano’s message during the ceremony also emphasized the importance of unity despite differences in people’s responsibilities and views on what makes someone a hero.
The Mandaue City Police Office joined the commemoration along with representatives from the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Education, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
The MCPO Special Weapons and Tactics team conducted a simulated robbery response to demonstrate its readiness in handling high-risk incidents.
An AFP K9 unit also staged a demonstration highlighting the capabilities of trained dogs in security and law enforcement operations.
The city’s commemoration linked National Heroes Day with the contributions of public servants, uniformed personnel and ordinary residents who help keep their families and communities safe and supported.
