Around 1,757 qualified solo parents in Mandaue City are set to receive P12,000 each in annual financial assistance, with the next tranche potentially released next week.
The assistance was discussed during a Sept. 10 meeting between Mayor Thadeo “Jonkie” Ouano and officials of the City Social Welfare Services Office (CSWSO) as the city works to expand its services and benefits for solo parents.
CSWSO Head Dr. Michael Pielago and Federation of Solo Parents Mandaue City Chapter focal person Pureza Tabuac joined the meeting to discuss programs for solo parents and other social welfare concerns.
Each qualified solo parent is entitled to P12,000 in annual assistance, with the next release expected to cover beneficiaries included in the city’s list of qualified recipients.
Tabuac also raised concerns over the need to strengthen Mandaue’s anti-mendicancy program, saying CSWSO personnel have again observed an increase in people roaming and begging in various parts of the city despite existing government interventions.
She said some mendicants continue to return to the streets even after authorities conduct interventions and extend assistance, making the recurring presence of beggars a continuing concern.
Ouano said he would bring the implementation of the anti-mendicancy program to the City Council for discussion and explore measures to make the campaign stricter and more effective.
The mayor also recognized the CSWSO’s role in delivering social welfare programs, particularly assistance for solo parents and other sectors in need of government support.
City Administrator Atty. Gonzalo “Sally” Malig-on Jr. and Executive Secretary Atty. Riczen Gingoyon also attended the meeting.
