The Department of Health Central Visayas (DOH 7) has warned residents in flood prone areas to avoid exposure to potentially contaminated water and mud after 273 leptospirosis cases, including 18 deaths, were recorded in the region from Jan. 1 to Sept. 8, 2026.
Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Cañal, Medical Officer IV of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit 7 (RESU 7), said people can contract leptospirosis through contact with soil or water contaminated with the urine of animals infected with Leptospira bacteria.
She said a person does not necessarily need to have an open wound for the bacteria to enter the body.
Open wounds remain a risk factor, particularly when a person comes into contact with muddy or dirty floodwater, Cañal added.
The bacteria can also enter through mucous membranes, including the eyes and mouth, when contaminated water or mud splashes onto or comes into contact with them.
Cañal said rats are not the only possible source of Leptospira bacteria, as other animals such as dogs and cattle can also carry and spread the bacteria.
Animals can acquire the bacteria through exposure to other infected animals, after which they may release Leptospira through their urine, contaminating soil and water.
Because of this, DOH 7 advised the public to avoid wading through floodwaters and coming into contact with mud or water that may be contaminated.
For people who cannot avoid exposure, the health agency recommended wearing protective footwear and immediately washing the body after contact with floodwater or potentially contaminated water.
The DOH also urged those who develop symptoms following exposure to seek medical attention promptly.
Possible symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting and yellowing of the skin and eyes.
