Thousands of Lapu-Lapu residents received rice assistance and access to other government services during a nationwide service activity held Monday at the Hoops Dome in Barangay Gun-ob.
A total of 6,019 residents each received 10 kilograms of rice through the “Handog ng Pangulo: Serbisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat” activity held in connection with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s birthday.
The rice assistance was funded through the Local Government Support Fund and distributed through the joint efforts of the Lapu-Lapu City Government and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
DILG 7 Regional Director Leocadio Trovela said cooperation between national government agencies and local government units is important in bringing government programs and services closer to communities.
He said coordination between agencies and LGUs allows assistance and public services to be delivered more effectively to residents.
The activity also included the release of the second tranche of the UPLIFT payout, services from the Department of Labor and Employment and the Philippine Statistics Authority, and free legal consultations through the Office of the City Prosecutor.
Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan said the activity demonstrated how national and local governments can work together to provide assistance to residents.
King-Chan also emphasized that the city’s P20-per-kilo rice program is separate from the national government’s rice assistance.
She said the city purchases rice stocks from Food Terminal Incorporated and sells them at P20 per kilo without earning a profit.
King-Chan expressed hope that the assistance would help ease the financial burden on beneficiaries and provide additional support for their families.
Members of the 17th Sangguniang Panlungsod, barangay officials, DILG 7 officials, DBM 7 Regional Director Maricor Baquial, PIA 7 Regional Head Fayette Rinen and DILG Lapu-Lapu City Director Dr. Neila Aquino attended the activity.
