CEBU CITY, Philippines — Students from the Fine Arts Students Organization (FASO) and the UP Students’ Theater Arts Guild for Education (UPSTAGE) staged performances portraying the atrocities and human rights abuses committed during Martial Law during the opening of the 9th annual 1081 Exhibit at the University of the Philippines Cebu on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
The performances formed part of the opening program of the week-long exhibit, organized by the Communicators of UP (CommUP), under the theme “And Kamatuoran Taliwala sa Kangitngit.”
Through theatrical presentations and artistic expressions, the students revisited historical accounts and experiences associated with Martial Law, highlighting the importance of remembering the past and reflecting on its impact on human rights and society.
The 1081 Exhibit uses art, performances, and discussions to preserve the memory of Martial Law, confront its human rights abuses, and encourage critical reflection on how its legacy continues to shape society. By bringing historical narratives into a student-led public space, the exhibit promotes remembrance, dialogue, and vigilance against the repetition of past abuses.
The exhibit is open from September 16 to 21, 2026, at the Jose T. Joya Gallery, University of the Philippines Cebu.
