More than 20,000 school supply sets have been turned over to 12 public elementary schools in Mandaue City as the city government rolls out its EdukAhon assistance program.
A total of 20,611 sets were distributed Thursday to schools in the West District Cluster 2 and North District, part of the city’s planned distribution of around 38,000 sets to public elementary schools across Mandaue.
The EdukAhon sets contain school bags, notebooks, pencils, ballpens, rulers, scissors, tumblers and raincoats to provide pupils with basic supplies for their daily schooling.
The West District Cluster 2 received 7,074 sets for Canduman Elementary School, Casili Elementary School, Cubacub Elementary School, Mandaue City School for the Arts, Pagsabungan Elementary School and Don Calixto C. Yongco Sr. Elementary School.
Another 13,537 sets went to the North District for Basak Elementary School, Labogon Elementary School, Leonard Wood Elementary School, Opao Elementary School, Paknaan Elementary School and Umapad Elementary School.
The distribution began Wednesday, when 12,092 sets were allocated to nine schools in the Central and South districts.
Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano said the city considered the quality and durability of the supplies when it assembled the EdukAhon sets.
“Ako jud gitan-aw ang quality, kung durable, dili lang mo-last og pila ka buwan, kanang mulungtad jud ba,” Ouano said.
He said the distribution was supposed to begin earlier but was delayed because of the supplier.
“Supposedly earlier unta ni nato ihatag, wala man naapas sa atong supplier. Karon, sa second sem na nila. So hopefully by next year, before June, ma-ready na nato atong mga school supplies,” Ouano said.
Ouano said the program forms part of the city government’s efforts to support pupils through assistance that may appear simple but can still have an impact on children who need school supplies.
“These are simple things, perhaps, but for a child who needs them, they can make a real difference,” he said.
Mandaue City Lone District Rep. Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano-Dizon, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and Department of Education-Mandaue City Division officials led by Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Bianito Dagatan attended Thursday’s turnover.
City Councilor Atty. Joel Seno, chairman of the council’s Committee on Education, reminded pupils that the supplies should complement guidance from their parents and teachers.
“Please continue guiding our students. Teach them the good values because no EdukAhon is enough to be a substitute for your proper guidance,” Seno said.
Pupils from Basak Elementary School also performed a song during the turnover as a gesture of appreciation for the assistance.
The city government will continue distributing EdukAhon sets to the remaining public elementary schools covered by the program.
