P25M secured for Mandaue public market rehabilitation

Repairs to the Mandaue City Public Market are set to move forward with P25 million in funding secured for rehabilitation work following damage caused by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu last year.

City Administrator Atty. Gonzalo Malig-on Jr. said the funding was secured through the Office of Congresswoman Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano-Dizon after Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano sought assistance for the rehabilitation of the market.

“Of course, magpasalamat ang syudad ni Congresswoman Emmarie ‘Lolypop’ Ouano-Dizon kay nisugot siya sa hangyo ni Mayor last year pagkaguba sa merkado,” Malig-on said.

Malig-on said the P25 million is already available for use this year, with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) expected to implement the rehabilitation works.

The funding will cover repairs to sections of the market damaged by the earthquake, including broken posts and a collapsed canopy.

The rehabilitation will also include replacement of the market’s deteriorating roof, improvements to the flooring and drainage system in the fish market section, and minor repairs to the comfort rooms.

Malig-on said the fish market has been a frequent source of complaints because of its wet flooring and odor, making improvements to the area one of the major components of the project.

He clarified that the project is not intended to give the public market a major facelift but will focus on substantial repairs and improvements to its existing facilities.

The rehabilitation is expected to begin before the end of the year and be completed in 2027.
