Lapu-Lapu honors teachers, pushes higher financial assistance

Teachers in Lapu-Lapu City received a tribute from the city government and the Department of Education (DepEd) as thousands gathered for the city’s World Teachers’ Day celebration on Oct. 3.

Held at the Hoops Dome in Barangay Gun-ob, the celebration carried the theme “Teacher, Ikaw Naman,” recognizing the dedication and sacrifices of educators in shaping students and communities.

Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan thanked teachers for their continuing service and highlighted their influence beyond the classroom.

“There are people who teach us what to know. And there are people who change what we believe we can become,” King-Chan said.

She said teachers can influence how students see themselves and their future, with the impact of a good educator lasting beyond their years in school.

The city government also highlighted its financial assistance programs for nationally hired teaching and non-teaching personnel of the DepEd Lapu-Lapu City Schools Division.

Under Ordinance No. 16-165-2024, authored by City Councilor Annabeth Cuizon, qualified nationally hired teachers and non-teaching personnel of the DepEd Lapu-Lapu City Schools Division receive P2,000 in financial assistance. The measure also covers teachers and non-teaching personnel of the Lapu-Lapu City College.

Another measure, Ordinance No. 16-171-2024, provides a P3,000 special allowance to nationally hired teaching and non-teaching personnel of the DepEd Lapu-Lapu City Schools Division.

King-Chan has asked the city council to increase the P2,000 assistance under Ordinance No. 16-165-2024 by P1,000, which would bring the assistance to P3,000.

The celebration opened with a Thanksgiving Mass and included messages from teachers and DepEd officials, including Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Andales and Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Ronald Ferrer.

The city also organized “Libreng Serbisyo para sa mga Magtutudlo” as part of the celebration, bringing various services closer to teachers.

The program featured district entries in “Bangga sa Agik-ek ni Ma’am ug Sir,” with P40,000 in total cash prizes, and a mini-concert tribute by STECadencian.

King-Chan also surprised teachers with 120 raffle prizes during the event.

Cuizon, City Councilors Ariane Neil Marie Yap, Celestino Aying and Rufo Bering also attended the celebration.

The city government said its assistance programs for educators are intended to make support for teachers a sustained part of local governance rather than a once-a-year gesture.
