Palace says rice stocks enough for 75 days ahead of super El Niño

The Philippines has sufficient food reserves to cover domestic demand for weeks as the country prepares for the anticipated effects of a super El Niño, Malacañang said.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said Wednesday that the country’s rice supply could last 75 days, while pork stocks could cover up to 170 days and chicken supply up to 125 days.

Castro said the government could also import food if necessary to augment domestic supplies.

“Sinisiguro rin ng pamahalaan ang sapat na suplay ng bigas at iba pang pangunahing pagkain sa pamamagitan ng paghahanda ng reserbang suplay at pag-aangkat kung kinakailangan,” Castro said.

(The government also ensures a sufficient supply of rice and other basic food by preparing reserve stocks and importing if necessary.)

Aside from food security, Castro said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. wanted to ensure adequate supplies of water, electricity and oil as the country braces for El Niño.

The government also urged households to conserve water and electricity to help mitigate the effects of the weather phenomenon.

Rice, pork and chicken are among the country’s staple foods, making their availability a key concern for households and food businesses as conditions change.

The administration said preparations to secure food, water, power and fuel align with its Bagong Pilipinas agenda of keeping basic necessities available and accessible to Filipino families.

Maintaining reserve stocks and importing supplies when needed are among the measures the government cited in preparing for the anticipated effects of El Niño.
