Lapu-Lapu sets safety rules for holiday firecracker sales

Firecracker vendors in Lapu-Lapu City must keep their selling areas at least 30 meters away from residential neighborhoods as the city prepares designated sites for holiday sales in Barangays Babag and Canjulao.

The safety requirement was among the measures discussed during a coordination meeting led by Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan on Oct. 20 ahead of the holiday season.

“Atong unahon ang welfare sa mga tawo,” King-Chan said, emphasizing the need to prioritize public safety.

The city plans to allocate at least 83 stalls for vendors, with the main selling area along the bypass road in Barangay Babag. Sales are scheduled to begin on Dec. 16.

Assistant City Administrator and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department officer-in-charge Dr. Nagiel Bañacia raised concerns about fire prevention and stressed the need to comply with safety protocols when setting up the selling areas.

Before sales begin, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO) will jointly inspect the designated sites to check compliance with fire safety regulations.

King-Chan also directed barangay officials to ensure that the selling areas have proper sanitation, portable toilets, solar lighting and safe access routes.

The city will finalize stall assignments and establish a committee composed of representatives from the BFP, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department, LCPO, concerned barangays, City Council and City Traffic Management System.

The committee will oversee operations at the selling areas and help maintain peace and order throughout the selling period.

Authorities will also hold a separate orientation to brief vendors on the rules and procedures for selling firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

Among those who attended the meeting were Congressman Junard “Ahong” Chan, BFP Lapu-Lapu City Fire District Chief Fire Superintendent Arnel Abella, City Councilor Rufo Bering, Babag Barangay Captain Eulogio Manayon, Canjulao Barangay Captain Nestor Paypa, Secretary to the Mayor Atty. Misaellee Tejano and City Administrator Engr. Ariel Pahimutang.
