Mandaue opts for simple office Christmas parties amid austerity measures

Mandaue City employees will celebrate Christmas through smaller gatherings in their respective offices instead of a grand citywide party as the local government continues to enforce austerity measures.

Mayor Thadeo “Jonkie” Ouano said the city would still allocate funds for the annual celebrations, but the budget would be lower than in previous years.

He encouraged employees to hold modest parties and avoid lavish gatherings, expensive gifts and extravagant raffle prizes.

“Kining Pasko, once a year ra ni nato i-celebrate. This is the time nga magpasalamat ta sa mga nitabang nato throughout the year. Bisan simple celebration is okay ra siguro,” Ouano said.

He said employees could still gather and celebrate with their colleagues, provided that the activities remain simple.

“Mag-Christmas party sila sa ilang offices, pero kanang simple lang,” he said.

Ouano added that the city would maintain its spending restrictions as it prepares for the possible effects of the El Niño phenomenon.

“Magpabilin gihapon atong austerity,” he said.

Mandaue also opted against holding a centralized Christmas party in 2025 after a series of calamities affected Cebu, including Typhoon Tino and the magnitude 6.9 earthquake.

City employees instead held separate Christmas gatherings within their respective departments and offices.
