While national political debates swirl, Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro chose to respond not with a brief remark but with a lengthy message underscoring her focus on public service.

Baricuatro pushed back against mounting criticism from supporters of Vice President Sara Duterte over what they described as a restrained response to Duterte’s announcement that she will run for president in 2028.

The governor reiterated that she remains “color-blind” in politics and focused on serving Cebu.

“Please allow me to serve the people, as I promised,” Baricuatro wrote.

Her statement came days after Duterte revealed her decision to seek the presidency. In an earlier press conference at the Cebu Provincial Capitol, Baricuatro said, “I know that’s her intention and I welcome it.”

She emphasized keeping her attention on governance. “Let’s talk about politics later. Trabaho sa ta karon. Let’s talk about politics later, kay basin masagulan atong trabaho. Color blind sa ko karon,” she added.

Duterte-affiliated groups questioned her loyalty and accused her of failing to show “utang na loob,” while supporters said her stance demonstrates independence and commitment to local governance.

Baricuatro said delivering programs and services, including infrastructure and waste management initiatives, remains the priority of her administration.

“Let politics take its course. My focus remains where it has always been on the welfare of the Cebuano people. My heart, my mind, and all that I am belong to Cebu Province,” she said.

Duterte formally declared her candidacy at her Mandaluyong City office, saying, “I am Sara Duterte. I will run for president of the Philippines. I offer my life, my strength, and my future in the service of our nation,” and declined follow-up questions.

The development comes amid a political rift with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who reportedly wished Duterte “good luck,” according to Palace press officer Claire Castro.

Duterte is the eldest daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, who remains in The Hague under the custody of the International Criminal Court over allegations tied to his anti-drug campaign.

Baricuatro maintained that she will continue focusing on provincial priorities and avoid being drawn into divisive national politics as discussions around the 2028 race intensify.
