Cebu Province is eyeing a potential role as a major sports development hub, following proposals to build a world-class international sports complex supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The project, which could occupy a 20-hectare site, gained momentum after Governor Pamela Baricuatro met with PSC officials and private sector partners earlier this week to explore collaboration opportunities.

The proposed facility is envisioned as a modern, multi-sport complex that would serve as a long-term training ground for Filipino athletes, particularly those from the Visayas.

MTD Philippines, the firm behind the New Clark City development in Tarlac, which has hosted major regional sporting events, presented the concept.

Plans for the Cebu complex include venues for athletics, football, aquatics, and beach volleyball, all designed to meet international competition standards.

Officials said the facility could also serve as a multi-use development, potentially housing a Provincial Government Center to bring government services closer to local communities.

The complex could play a strategic role if the Philippines secures hosting rights for the 2028 Asian Beach Games, further boosting Cebu’s profile in international sports.

PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio indicated the agency’s readiness to finance the project through a partnership with the provincial government.

Governor Baricuatro highlighted Cebu’s growing reputation in sports, including dancesport, and emphasized investments that would strengthen the province as a premier athletic destination.

While a final site has yet to be selected, potential locations include a property in Barangay Balili, City of Naga, owned by the provincial government.

Interest has also come from local leaders, with Dumanjug Mayor Gungun Gica offering a 30-hectare lot if the complex is built in his town.

Assistant Provincial Administrator Aldwin Empaces said the long-term vision includes establishing multiple sports hubs across Cebu, each specializing in particular disciplines.

“This approach would allow different towns to focus on their strengths, from track and field to sports tourism, creating a province-wide ecosystem for athletic development,” he said.

Among initial proposals is upgrading the Sudlon property in Lahug into a dedicated gymnastics facility, along with plans for track and swimming venues in other areas, including Balamban.

Empaces said distributing facilities across Cebu would improve access for athletes while boosting tourism through new sports and recreation destinations. (SBA)
