Born and raised in the humble province of Misamis Oriental, Philippines, Sofronio Vasquez’s journey is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of dreams. Now based in Utica, New York, Sofronio first captured the hearts of Filipinos nationwide when he competed in Tawag ng Tanghalan in 2017. Finishing in seventh place, he didn’t just walk away, he later returned as a vocal coach, nurturing new talents with the same dedication he showed on stage.

But it was on the global stage of The Voice USA Season 26 that Sofronio truly soared. In December 2024, he made history as the first Filipino and Asian grand champion, stunning audiences and coaches alike with his undeniable talent. His remarkable performances earned him a coveted four-chair turn from music icons Michael Bublé, Gwen Stefani, Reba McEntire, and Snoop Dogg—a rare feat that highlighted his extraordinary gift.

After nearly three years away from the spotlight, Sofronio’s inspiring story became the premiere episode of the beloved drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK) in April 2025. The episode first streamed on iWantTFC before airing on Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, and Kapamilya Online Live, touching hearts with a narrative of hope and resilience.

Sofronio’s roots are deeply embedded in his childhood in Misamis Oriental, where he grew up in a financially struggling family. Despite the hardships, music was a source of joy and connection, especially with his father, who was also his first coach and greatest supporter. When his father passed away, Sofronio faced a crossroads, torn between pursuing a practical career in dentistry and chasing his lifelong passion for music.

Choosing to follow his heart, he bravely entered local singing contests, gradually building a name for himself. His breakthrough on Tawag ng Tanghalan marked the beginning of a new chapter, which eventually led him to the United States. There, his unwavering dedication culminated in an unprecedented victory on The Voice USA.

Reflecting on his journey, Sofronio shared words that resonate deeply with anyone chasing their dreams: “Believe that you can, and manifest it with your whole heart. Dreams really do come true.”

When asked about his father’s influence, Sofronio’s voice softened with emotion: “Kasi mahilig siyang kumanta. He was my coach, pero hindi ko na masasabi sa kaniya na nanalo ako. Hindi niya na ako mapagyayabang sa mga friends niya.”

He added, “Sinasabi ko lang na ‘Kung ‘andito ka, anong sasabihin mo sa ‘kin?’ Tapos naririnig ko lang ‘yung boses niya na ‘Just breathe. Kayang-kaya mo yan. Always naman ‘yon nagsasabi sa akin na ‘Every time na kumanta ka, don’t forget to do the sign of the cross.’”

Sofronio’s story is not just about victory but also resilience. Despite his loss in Tawag ng Tanghalan, where he placed seventh, he never saw it as a failure but as a redirection. Instead of closing doors, that experience opened new ones that led him to become a vocal coach and eventually to the grand stage of The Voice USA.

His journey reminds us all, especially those who face rejection or setbacks: sometimes “no” isn’t the end, but the universe’s way of guiding you toward something greater.

For anyone who has been told they’re not enough or who feels stuck after a setback, Sofronio’s story is a beacon of hope. A living proof that with courage and faith, rejection can be the first step toward your biggest breakthrough.
